THE KULTA METHOD

How to apply lime paint — a soft, cloud-like limewash finish

An expressive KULTA Lime Paint finish starts with a correctly prepared surface, two thin coats and free brush movement while always keeping a wet edge.

  • 012 thin coats
  • 02Next coat the following day
  • 03Work at +5 to +30 °C
  • 04Protect for the first 24 hours

1. Prepare the surface and choose the right primer

The substrate must be fully dry, stable and clean. Remove loose material, repair defects, sand and dust thoroughly. Protect floors, windows, sockets and nearby surfaces.

Choose for the substrate, not the room

Stir the primer thoroughly and apply one thin, even coat with a roller. Paint only when fully dry — usually the following day.

2. Mix first; dilute only when needed

When opening the pail, mix thoroughly until the consistency and colour are completely even. The right consistency resembles pouring cream: the brush glides easily, the paint spreads thinly and does not run.

If the paint already spreads easily, do not add water. Always test a small area first.

Maximum dilution

20%1st / 1.
10%2nd / 2.

Add water gradually in a separate clean container and measure precisely. Keep the same ratio across one complete wall plane.

KULTA BRUSH TECHNIQUE

3. Build the cloud effect with a brush

Work with the KULTA 4 × 14 Essential Brush in small, connected zones. The aim is not perfect circles, but a lively, irregular pattern.

Three-stage demonstration of the KULTA cloud-like lime paint finish using a wide brush
  1. 1

Create 2–3 free, irregular areas close to one another.

  2. 2

Change brush direction in each area: crosswise, diagonally and in gentle arcs.

  3. 3

While the edges are wet, connect the areas and soften only the most visible transitions.

  4. 4

Continue in the same rhythm across the full wall, stepping back occasionally to assess the whole surface.

  5. 5

If several people are working, agree on the same movement rhythm and dilution.

Keep a wet edge

Complete one wall plane without a long break and stop at a corner or opening. Do not work intensely over areas that have already started to dry.

4. Apply the second thin coat

Once the first coat has dried and hardened, usually the following day, mix the paint again and apply the second coat thinly using the same movement rhythm. This creates the final depth and character.

24 h

Trust the drying process

Fresh lime paint may look darker, more transparent or uneven. This is normal — the colour and cloud pattern settle as the surface dries.

+5 — +30 °C

The right conditions are part of the finish

  • Work at +5 to +30 °C.
  • Avoid direct sun, rain, strong wind and draughts.
  • Protect the fresh surface from moisture and mechanical contact for at least 24 hours.
  • Wait at least 2 weeks before cleaning or applying Top Coat.

Brush or roller?

Brush — for an expressive limewash finish

Free, crossing strokes create a layered cloud pattern and a more lively surface.

Roller — for a calmer finish

A thin, even application creates a quieter texture. Work without breaks and avoid roller ridges.

Protection and care

In hallways, kitchens and other frequently touched areas, apply KULTA Top Coat no sooner than 2 weeks later, ideally in two thin coats.

KULTA Top Coat

Clean gently

  • Wait at least 2 weeks before the first cleaning.
  • Start with clean water and a soft, non-abrasive cloth.
  • Repair small marks locally with the same paint, dilution and brush movement.

Approximate coverage

Primer: about 0.20 l/m² for one coat

Lime paint: about 0.30–0.40 l/m² total for two coats

Allow 5–10% extra for substrate absorbency and application method.

If the finish does not look right yet

The fresh surface looks patchy

Wait until fully dry. Lime paint colour and pattern change during drying.

Joins between zones are visible

On the next plane, work in smaller zones and connect them while the edges are still wet.

Runs or heavy ridges appear

There is too much material. Spread it more thinly and do not rework an area already drying.

The paint is difficult to spread

Mix thoroughly again and, if needed, add water gradually without exceeding the recommended amount.
